Public urged not to take part in unlawful protests on Hong Kong Island tonightThe police said today they notice some netizens have been calling on members of the public to take part in unauthorized assemblies on Hong Kong Island tonight, and urged people not to participate as it will violate the Public Order Ordinance and social distancing measures to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Today marks one year since pro-democracy protests began, when about one million people took to the streets on Hong Kong Island to protest against the now-withdrawn extradition bill. Some rioters have been inciting others on the internet to attack officers using petrol bombs, in an attempt to force deployment of tear gas, police said, and strongly condemn the malicious and irresponsible messages that intended to encourage the use of violence. "The police will deploy adequate manpower in relevant locations today and take resolute action to enforce the law, including making arrests."
