Public transport fares set to rise

Once the general holidays come to an end, public transport vehicles will no longer be able to operate as they did before because they will have to follow protocols, set by the government, intended to contain the spread of coronavirus. “Public transport fares may increase slightly,” said one source. Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) are taking initiatives to facilitate the implementation of the new system. Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said at a briefing on Thursday that public transport owners and labour leaders will discuss the matter with BRTA on Friday. “To protect the drivers and passengers from Covid-19, every public transport should maintain the health protocol,” Quader said.
