Public health won’t tell us which employers have COVID-19 outbreaks. But we obtained WSIB data to help paint a picture


Some 6,600 workers’ compensation claims were filed during the first wave of the pandemic. Almost 1,100 workers’ compensation claims were filed by private operators Sienna Senior Living, Extendicare, Revera and Responsive Group or their subsidiaries. But among health units, there has been little uniformity in releasing information about employers witnessing outbreaks outside of health care. The data shows the total number of claims registered by employer — including allowed claims, rejected claims and pending claims. “This was not a requirement from public health,” said health unit spokesperson Michael Janisse.
