Public Universities, Colleges in Liberia Struggling to Operate after President Weah’s Tuition-Free Pronouncement

MONROVIA – President George Weah’s decision to make public universities tuition-free is causing serious embarrassments for these tertiary institutions, as there was no consultation with the heads of the schools before the pronouncement. Weeks disclosed that there was no consultation with the university’s administration before the pronouncement by the President. Weeks lamented that there is the possibility of the community colleges raising their fees to mitigate the loss of revenue. This, she said, is because if the University of Liberia, the nation’s premier university cannot obtain her fair share of the program, what’s the possibility of the smaller colleges and universities. Anything less than this, the Weah-led government will fully account for the future of over 19,000 Liberian students.
