Hope is a belief that what we do might matter, an understanding that the future is not yet written. A group that called itself the Clamshell Alliance arose to oppose building a nuclear power plant in New Hampshire. They did inspire a sister organization, the Abalone Alliance in central California, which used similar strategies to try to stop the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. The groups protested against two particular nuclear power plants; those two plants opened anyway. Participation in the civil rights movement of the early 1960s shaped many lives.
