Promising season for little penguins

Little penguins have laid a record number of eggs this season. PHOTO: SUPPLIEDLittle penguins have had a record breeding year at Pilots Beach near Dunedin, thanks to a heap of new nest boxes. Blue Penguins Pukekura scientist Hiltrun Ratz said more eggs than ever had been laid this season. This season, 568 eggs were laid, compared with 446 last season. Little penguins did well when they were looked after on land, but a fluctuating food supply could cause numbers to collapse.
