★★★★☆You wouldn’t find British orchestral musicians sitting on the platform practising scales and twiddly bits 25 minutes before the concert starts. Yet the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra was hot on the job, making sinuous and perky sounds long before Louis Langrée, its music director since 2013, cracked the whip for a marvellously atmospheric and sulphuric account of Bernstein’s On the Waterfront suite. Perhaps, although its European visits elsewhere have been sporadic; it disappeared for 26 years during the 1970s, the 1980s and beyond. This touring programme showed us what we have been missing.
