Volunteers tie a new rope around a sperm whale stranding at Caroline Bay to connect it to a digger in June. The joint rescue of a stranded sperm whale at Caroline Bay has prompted an inaugural Timaru stop for Project Jonah’s annual touring Marine Mammal Medic course. Fifteen of the 32 spots available for the Timaru course had already been snapped up, the animal welfare charity’s communications and volunteer manager, Louisa Hawkes, said. “This is the first time I’ve run one here [a course in Timaru] in the eight years I’ve been with Project Jonah,” Hawkes said.
