This is the first visit to China by Ali as prime minister of the east African country. He was sworn in as Ethiopia's prime minister in April 2018. Before this, he was elected the chairman of Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in March, and the chairman of Oromo Peoples' Democratic Organization (OPDO), one of the four coalition parties of the EPRDF, in February. Ali, 42, has several degrees from universities in Ethiopia, South Africa, Britain and the United States.
