Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) Special Commissioner H. Arun Kumar has ordered an inquiry into the foster care system and the renewals given by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Krishna district. Responding to the news published in The Hindu, Mr. Kumar said there was no foster system in the State and that no children were given for foster care to any couple in the last few years by the department. But, the CWC did not share information with the DCPU (of WD&CW department) on foster care children, and the committee recently renewed some cases (gave extension for stay of children with foster parents), it is learnt. “Foster care system was not in force in many States, including Andhra Pradesh, and the WD&CW officials did not encourage the system as we have not issued the guidelines. We are inquiring as to how many children are under the foster care in Krishna and other districts in the State,” Mr. Kumar said.
