In a statement, the Irish Prison Service confirmed that the inmate died in custody on April 1. They continued: “All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant. In 2024, the average weekly Irish prison population has soared by 26 per cent from 4,583 in 2023 to 5,417.
