Privy Council Clerk Michael Wernick resigns after controversy over SNC-Lavalin testimony

OTTAWA — After weeks of controversy over his role in the SNC-Lavalin scandal and accusations he stepped beyond the non-partisan mandate of his job, Michael Wernick, the Clerk of the Privy Council and head of the federal public service, has announced his resignation. After hearing testimony from Wernick and Wilson-Raybould on the SNC-Lavalin affair, some opposition MPs publicly called on Wernick to resign. In her own testimony, Wilson-Raybould alleged Wernick made “veiled threats” toward her in a phone call on Dec. 19, 2018, and pressured her to follow Trudeau’s preference to defer the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin. 6, Wernick fought back against accusations his testimony had been too partisan and supportive of the Liberal government. Wernick will be replaced in the role by Ian Shugart, who currently serves as deputy minister of foreign affairs.
