Private-equity executives are playing a familiar role in political races unfolding across the country: spending big to defend their industry’s interests. As private equity faces the most serious political challenge it has seen in years, industry executives have—unsurprisingly—kept their wallets closed for prominent critics such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (D., Vt.), who have portrayed private-equity firms as job-destroying vampires.
