She said recommendations from a damning report into the scandal would be implemented in full, including a review of the so-called hostile environment, brought in when Theresa May was Home Secretary. Speaking in the Commons, two years on from the Windrush scandal, Ms Patel said: “What happened to the Windrush generation is unspeakable and no-one with a legal right to be here should ever have been penalised. “I’ve tasked my officials to undertake a full evaluation of the compliant environment policy [hostile environment] and measures individually (and cumulatively) to make sure the crucial balance is right. Last month, the report’s author Wendy Williams said there was a “grave risk” of another scandal if ministers ignored her advice.
