Prisoners will be able to study for apprenticeships to keep them on “the straight and narrow”, the Government has announced. For the first time, the law change will allow inmates in open prisons to apply for apprenticeships in sectors such as hospitality and construction. “Currently prisoners are unable to take advantage of apprenticeships, which would give them access to gold-standard training so they can gain the skills needed to secure work on release,” the Department for Education said. Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice, Dominic Raab, said the prisoner apprenticeships would give offenders “the skills and training they need to secure a job on release”. “This is why I strongly welcome today’s announcement from the justice secretary and education secretary.
