Christchurch Men's Prison staff used eight unauthorised listening devices to intercept the conversations of inmates. Prison staff who used unauthorised covert listening devices to spy on inmates at one of the country's largest prisons have escaped charges. Iain McGregor Detective Inspector Mike Ford said the investigation looked closely at the actions of more than a dozen prison staff. The Corrections security review identified serious issues at the prison beyond the unauthorised spying. Prison director John Roper and regional unit manager Doug Smith were sacked last year in the wake of the security review.
