Amid a controversy over alleged use of mobile phone by beedi tycoon Muhammed Nisham, serving term for killing a security guard, a senior prison official on Saturday denied the allegation and said he had not made any mobile calls from jail. DIG of prisons (north zone) Sivadas K Thaiparambil visited Kannur Central Prison, where Nisham is lodged, and said the convict had not made any mobile calls from the jail. A search was conducted in the prison cell where Nisham is lodged, but no mobile phone was found, the DIG said. The DIG also said he has filed a report with the DGP Prisons stating that no mobile calls had been made by the accused while inside the prison. Reports had alleged that Nisham was in possession of two mobile phones and he was frequently making calls.
