Prime Minister Downplays Divisions within EPRDF, Vows Continued ReformAugust 25, 2018 - Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed provided his first press conference yesterday and discussed a range of issues, including the ongoing reforms and challenges within EPRDF, conflict in Jigjiga and elsewhere, and the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The prime minister downplayed rumored rift within the EPRDF, especially with the TPLF, saying that the TPLF as well as the people of Tigray are fully behind the refoms ongoing. Dr. Abiy said the federal government had to intervene with restraint in Somali region to stop grave human rights violations such as holding prisoners in cages like wild animals, inflicting the psychological damages. He said investigations are also ongoing regarding major cases such as the June 23 bomb attack, and the killing of Sigmegnew Bekele. He added we have handed over a complicated water dam project to people (METEC) who have not seen a dam in their lives.
