Primary principals fight on for more pay

An Invercargill primary school principal has spoken of the "relentless" nature of the work as he and his colleagues throughout the country continue to fight for more pay. Last month primary teachers voted in favour of accepting the Government's latest collective agreement offer worth $1.5 billion, but principals rejected their offer. Invercargill's Donovan Primary School principal Peter Hopwood, also a member of the NZEI principals' council representing Southland, said the Government pay offers for principals had not changed which was why it was rejected. Fewer people were applying for principals jobs because the pay difference between teachers and principals was not worth the extra workload and responsibility, he said. Ministry spokeswoman Ellen MacGregor-Reid said the primary principals had between them rejected more than $64 million in NZEI-recommended pay rises.
