SOME people are haunted by the idea that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will make journalism worse. There are deep reasons why this should be so, which derive from the nature of the large language models presently hyped as “AI”. The (Indian) human says “I want to feedback you”, and the chatbot responds: “That is a meaningless gesture. No wonder that, according to the latest Harper’s Magazine, nine out of ten recent journalism graduates in the US regretted their choice of subject. I’ve started to think I’d really like to gain faith.
