MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte paid tribute to national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, whose martyrdom is marked today in Rizal Park. “May we take this occasion as an opportunity to recognize Dr. Rizal’s ultimate sacrifice for the sake of our country. Duterte noted as an author and scholar, Rizal denounced corruption, greed and other social ills that up to this day continue to plague society. Duterte, who has said he wanted to die like a hero, said Rizal inspired a movement that gave rise to the Filipino national identity. During the dark chapter in the nation’s history, Duterte noted how Rizal’s writings served as the light that guided Filipino forebears in the fight for genuine equality and independence.
