This has in turn been informed by weak ethical and political leadership, write Pregala Pillay and Chris Jones. In this article, we mainly focus on one of these challenges, namely corruption and its catastrophic consequences in Africa over decades. However, when examining different African countries, one finds many examples of how political leadership is, in fact, a major impediment to these countries' growth, development, transformation, and prosperity. A cumulative analysis of African political leadership emphasises the urgent need for democratic aspirations and principles, governance that can be deemed morally upright, and, most significantly, ethical leadership. This article is based, in part, on their book 'Lessons from Political Leadership in Africa: Towards Inspirational and Transformational Leaders' (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2022) co-edited with Purshottama Reddy and Sakhile Zondi.
