Powerful seniors’ groups lobby for emotion-focused care in nursing homes


Audrey Sinclair, a personal support worker in the Redstone unit at Peel Region’s Malton Village long-term care home, with resident Maxwell McCoy. The program is already used in five Alberta seniors homes and one nursing home, and is one of several such programs being considered by long-term care leaders in the City of Toronto. Ontario’s two long-term care associations are now also pushing for similar change. Together, Advantage Ontario and the Ontario Long Term Care Association represent the province’s 628 nursing homes that care for 78,000 people. Lisa Levin, CEO of Advantage Ontario, wants the Ontario government to help long-term care homes adopt emotion-focused programs that improve the lives of residents and staff.
