Pound rises before Theresa May’s speech


Having risen yesterday afternoon amid reports that Theresa May will signal a “soft” exit from the European Union in her landmark speech in Florence today the pound has traded flat overnight in Asia. At 7.13am it was at $1.359 against the dollar, up 0.09 per cent, less than a cent away from its highest level since the result of the June 2016 Brexit referendum. Against the euro the pound was trading at €1.135, down 0.14 per cent. Francis Elliott, our political editor, reports today that the prime minister “will set out plans today for a multispeed transition from the European Union, in which sectors of the economy will leave at different times to avoid a cliff-edge Brexit”.
