Pound breaches US$1.35 barrier on Brexit trade deal 'path to agreement'

The British pound broke through the long-awaited US$1.35 barrier on Wednesday morning after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said progress had been made toward a post-Brexit trade deal between the U.K. and the European Union, CNBC reports. “We have found a way forward on most issues but two issues remain outstanding: the level playing field and fisheries,” von der Leyen said. “I am glad to report that the issues linked to governance now have largely been resolved. The pound climbed by 0.4 percent against the dollar following the remarks, breaking above the US$1.35 barrier for the first time since May 2018. The euro also gained 0.45 percent against the greenback to top US$1.22 for the first time since April 2018.
