Post offices and rural life - News Summed Up

Post offices and rural life

Sir, – In deploring the closure of rural post offices, Fintan O’Toole recalls the days of phoning Falcarragh, Co Donegal, through knowledgeable local operators (“If we want to let village life die, let’s say so”, Opinion & Analysis, September 4th). The impending loss of the post offices “dramatises a much larger sense of decline and abandonment” felt in rural areas. His most notable plays were set in the fictional village of Ballybeg (Baile Beag). What a shame Friel is no longer with us to dramatise the effects of the very real closure of the Bunbeg (Bun Beag) post office. Sir, – I wonder how many of the letters sent to The Irish Times decrying the closure of post offices are sent electronically?
