PORTAGE — Police K-9 units are being lauded for their roles in two drug busts, including one that resulted in the seizure of 53 pounds of cocaine, 135 pounds of marijuana and 50 pounds of THC products, the Portage department said. Portage Police K-9 officer Java, who was serving as part of the Porter County Highway Interdiction Team, was reportedly present when officers stopped a vehicle along the local stretch of the Indiana Toll Road. It was during this stop that the large amounts of cocaine and marijuana products were discovered, police said. A second Portage K-9 officer, identified as Bane, was part of a second stop of a vehicle seen driving around railroad crossing gates and racing away at at extremely high speed, police said. "This case resulted in the arrests of two individuals for multiple felony charges," police said.
