KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has given the green light for the development of a port in Malacca under China’s Belt and Road initiative, says its deputy minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi. He said preliminary development work for the port would be carried out under a joint venture programme between local companies and companies from Guangdong, China, under the Melaka Gateway project. “We have given the approval to the Malacca government to develop another port for the state,” he told reporters after launching the World Maritime Day celebration and conference here yesterday. He said the project was to encourage local companies to seek international partners to develop the nation’s maritime facilities. He said the masterplan, to be completed by December, aimed to revitalise the nation’s shipping industry and maritime sector.
