Port of Tauranga says it is on track to break the New Zealand record for transporting more than one million containers in a single year. Rising cargo volumes and productivity gains have helped boost the port's first half profit to $41.9 million, up 8.5 per cent on a year ago. "With bigger ships calling at Tauranga, we are handling significantly larger volumes of cargo per shipment," he said. Shipping line Hamburg Sud also planned to bring a weekly larger ship service soley to Tauranga from March.
