Popular Mayo pub lodges planning application for major extension

Proposed works would include the removal of the flat roof on the existing single-storey annexe, along with the construction of a ground-floor extension and an additional upper floor over the existing building. According to documents submitted with the application, the extension has been designed to match the existing architectural character of The Merry Monk. At ground-floor level, the additional accommodation will include an entrance lobby serving the guest rooms, while the remaining ground-floor extension would accommodate an off-licence, complete with a new shopfront and associated signage. Parking requirements for the development indicate a total of 13 spaces will be needed, 11 for the guest rooms and staff, and two for the off-licence. The application was lodged by Ashbourne Pubs Ltd and is currently under consideration by Mayo County Council's planning department, with a decision due by February 14, 2026.
