Pope Francis started this Saturday a two-day visit to Morocco, a Muslim country wherein Muslims, Jews and Christians live in peace and harmony in a region threatened by growing extremism, populism and radicalism. Francis will be the second pope to visit the country, after St. Pope John Paul II was in 1985 the first pope to visit a Muslim country at the invitation of late King Hassan II. Moroccan laws and authorities do not tolerate the violation of the rights of religious minorities. Throughout its history, Morocco has set the example of cultural coexistence and interaction between Islam and other religions, particularly Judaism and Christianity. The religious rights of Muslims and non-Muslims are protected and guaranteed by the Moroccan Constitution.
