But on the evidence of the opening night of their European tour, the Rolling Stones are still the greatest rock’n’roll band in the world. It was around 1977 when Mick Jagger and his unlikely band of survivors were dismissed for being old and in the way. More than 40 years later, the argument for the Stones being surplus to requirements has become surplus to requirements.
