★★★★☆As the man himself said, berating an audience member for getting up to leave, “you’re gonna miss American Pie if you’re not careful”. At 72, Don McLean is clearly self-aware enough to know what his no-longer-young fans at the Palladium were waiting for. He played it, of course, and brilliantly, getting everyone creaking on to their feet and singing along.
