Almost two thirds of voters do not believe Senator John McGahon should be a Fine Gael general election candidate, according to the latest Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks opinion poll. The poll shows 61pc of those surveyed do not believe he should be a Fine Gael candidate, while 14pc said he should and 25pc said they did not know. Mr McGahon has not spoken since new details of his assault case emerged last weekend. The other man involved in the altercation with the politician, Breen White, told the Sunday Times he was “astonished” that Fine Gael selected Mr McGahon to run in the general election. Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has seen his support increase slightly after officially becoming a general election candidate.
