Politics could still drive project approval under proposed rules, B.C. lawyer warns

VANCOUVER—The public would have more input into major resource project reviews under proposed legislation, but a B.C. environmental lawyer fears the minister would still have too much leeway to make decisions based on politics. She would like more projects to be subject to federal review, including oilsands projects — a major contributor to emissions. She also doesn’t buy concerns about duplicating federal and provincial review processes because governments can always conduct an assessment together. The proposed legislation would no longer limit participation to people directly affected by a project; it engages people earlier in the process and requires “meaningful” participation, she said.
