Political donors are in the market for protest, not influence

Donate to a party in opposition and your dollars go to a crusade, a fight against the powers that be. Donate to a party in power and you’re accused of trying to buy friends and influence (see “cash for access” in the political lexicon of the past few years.) Frankly, we might be more surprised that anyone wants to risk donating anything at all these days to parties in power. Their years in minority position helped: they could keep asking donors to keep sending dollars to make sure none of the nasty opposition parties knocked them out of power. It’s far more lucrative in politics now — and far less risky — to sell protest than influence.
