Police’s anti-corruption unit has looked into more than 230 incidents involving officers, and prosecuted one for supplying a class B controlled drug. The national integrity unit (NIU), was announced in March last year – three months after corrupt former cop Vili Mahe Taukolo was jailed for selling police database information to gangs. Figures released to Stuff under the Official Information Act reveal 239 “matters” were referred to the NIU between January 31, 2020, and June 14 this year. Police National Headquarters, the Royal New Zealand Police College, National groups, and communications had 19 referrals to the NIU in total. Email sam.sherwood@stuff.co.nzThe NIU had charged only one officer, from the Wellington District, with supplying a Class B controlled drug.
