Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man died on Saturday while he was being transported in an Ottawa police cruiser. In a news release, the Special Investigations Unit said Ottawa police officers were called to respond to an intoxicated man outside the Lord Elgin Hotel around 12:15 p.m. By the time police arrived at the shelter, the man was unresponsive, the release said. The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
