Police stop interfaith wedding in Lucknow citing anti-conversion law

A new ordinance, set by the Uttar Pradesh government to stop unlawful conversion, became a law just one week ago. The wedding was scheduled to take place in the state capital, Lucknow's, Para area on Wednesday. Sources say both families intend to go ahead with the wedding after completing any legal formalities required under law. However, police claimed that the wedding ceremony was about to take place following Hindu rituals when they reached the spot. According to the ordinance, forced conversion (or conversion through fraud) will be punished by up to five years' imprisonment or a fine of ₹ 15,000.
