Police officer who stole $4000 granted interim name suppression

(file photo)A Taranaki police officer who admitted stealing $4000 cash has been allowed to keep their identity secret for now. Hughes applied for interim name suppression for the officer until their next appearance, which was not opposed. The registrar granted the application and remanded the defendant at large to reappear on April 8, so diversion could be completed. Stuff had sought and was granted permission to photograph the offender at their appearance but was no longer able to after interim name suppression was granted. Outside court, following the appearance, a man supporting the defendant made abusive hand gestures and verbally threatened a photographer and reporter.
