GEORGE TOWN: Another 22 Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers have been hauled up to assist with investigations into a protection racket involving lorry drivers. A Penang MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) spokesperson said the 22 officers aged between 20 and 45 were arrested when they turned up at the state MACC headquarters at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah here on Monday (April 22). On April 17, 30 individuals – 24 Penang JPJ officers and six civilians – were remanded for seven days over the probe. On April 21, five more Penang JPJ enforcement officers were arrested and have been remanded for a week. According to sources, the JPJ officers were suspected of receiving monthly payments of between RM10,000 and RM32,000 as an inducement not to take action against lorry drivers who committed traffic offences.
