Around 50 students, staging a protest commemorating the death anniversary of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, were on Tuesday detained as they tried to block the Janpath road of central Delhi. Following a protest call from JNU Students' Union, around 300 students from the JNU, Delhi University, and Jamia Milia Islamia University took out a rally from Mandi House to Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) but couldn't proceed due to police barricading at Janpath. "Students going to protest in front of MHRD against the institutional murder of Rohit Vemula were stopped midway, mercilessly dragged on the road and detained in Parliament Street Police Station," said JNU students' union member Satarupa Chakraborty. "Several students including JNU students' union president Mohit Pandey was brutally beaten up by the Parliament Street police. The protesting students were demanding an enquiry into the suicide and termed it as an 'institutional murder'.
