After quizzing Arefy, Harunor Rashid, chief of DMP’s DB, said Arefy is a native of Pabna. He moved to the US in mid 1980s with the help of his brother and has been living in Dhaka’s Baridhara since his return in 2022. He became close to Sarwardy during his stay in Baridhara and agreed to return to Dhaka from the US ahead of the BNP’s Oct 28 rally. Harunor said Sarwardy and Ishraque falsely identified him as an advisor to Biden and made him say that the US will target Bangladesh with more sanctions. The police officer also said they were checking if Arefy had falsified in exchange for money from the BNP leaders.
