Police arrest more than 40 in nationwide crackdown on courier fraud

Police have arrested more than 40 suspects in a nationwide crackdown on courier fraud gangs who con vulnerable elderly people over the phone then turn up at their doorsteps to steal millions of pounds of their savings. He first contacted them last August and the fraud was uncovered in October but details have been released today as police reveal more than 40 people have been arrested in a crackdown on so-called courier fraud across England and Wales. 'Courier fraudsters are nearly always part of broader criminal gangs: they are persuasive and can be aggressive. Courier fraud occurs when a criminal contacts victims by phone pretending to be an official, such as a bank worker or police officer, before offering easily-obtainable personal information to establish their trust. Total losses have amounted to more than £12million - although this will be an underestimate as this type of fraud is 'grossly under-reported', according to police.
