The suspects, aged between 28 and 42, were arrested for robbery, passing counterfeit banknotes and using false instruments. The victim sold a white private car on a second-hand vehicle trading platform for HK$40,000 four days prior to the December robbery, receiving dozens of fake HK$1,000 notes. Authorities believed they had cracked down a robbery gang, but did not rule out making more arrests. Senior inspector of the commercial crime bureau's counterfeiting unit, Tang Kwok-hin said the victim received the fake banknotes at night, thus could not find the bills to be phoney. Tang added that the counterfeit bills were of poor quality and urged the public and shop owners to pay extra attention when using cash.
