The Health and Safety Executive may never have a better chance for a little free publicity. Kate Lyon, one of its inspectors, made it to last night’s final of the Great British Bake Off. Yet the Bootle-based authority has been admirably restrained in exploiting her celebrity. In recent weeks it has quietly issued several press releases quoting Ms Lyon’s work admonishing Merseyside companies for safety shortcomings — including one as recently as October 5 about a worker at a kitchen-fitting firm who had two fingers severed by a circular saw. Perhaps its low-key strategy was for the best: a week later Ms Lyon nearly fainted during the pizza challenge — after almost cutting her own finger off on the fan oven.
