The prevalence rate of boys to girls diagnosed with autism is four to one. That means that for every four boys diagnosed with autism, there is one girl. What we think is that the prevalence rate is actually higher for girls and women, but that we're missing them. The gold-standard tests in autism assessment are ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) and both have male-autism type in mind. Girls on the autism spectrum often ace this test, because they know what they need to do socially.
