Plastic pollution Ireland: Couples are urged to 'break up with plastic' this Valentine's day

Break up with plasticOne in five Irish adults admitted to regularly flushing items that contain plastic down the loo in a 2022 survey. But thousands of unsuitable items like wipes, cigarette butts, cotton buds, dental floss, tampons and hair are flushed down toilets in Ireland instead of being put in the bin every day. Uisce Éireann's Tom Cuddy added: "Everyday, people flush items such as wet wipes down the toilet instead of simply putting them in the bin. In the lead up to Valentine’s Day, Think Before You Flush are asking you to #BreakUpWithPlastic and bin your wipes." The #BreakUpWithPlastic initiative aims to raise awareness of the impact of plastic pollution on our planet and marine environment by asking people to stop opting for single-use plastic.
