Passengers aboard a twin-engine aircraft flying to Sydney today watched a propeller shear off and disappear over the wing while the 34-seat plane was 6,000 feet above the ground. “They were a hair’s breadth away from a disaster,” Paul Cousins, president of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, said. “I don't know how the hell it didn’t damage the aircraft as it went past.”The Saab 340 twin-engine turbo-prop had started its descent into Sydney on an hour-long flight from the regional city of Albury when the two pilots and some of the 16 passengers noticed a sudden vibration. The pilots were about to shut down the right-hand engine when they looked from the cockpit window to see the propeller — rotating at thousands of revolutions…
