'Pirates Of The Caribbean': Disney Has More To Lose Than Depp

Walt DisneyAs of this writing, Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is predicted to earn around $80 million-$90 million over the course of its Fri-Mon Memorial Day weekend bow. But while I don't think the bad press will hurt the movie, its probable success will be of much more value to Walt Disney than to Johnny Depp. First of all, Johnny Depp hasn't had an unmitigated smash hit since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides back in May 2011. Point being, and I say this as the one guy who likes Mortdecai, Johnny Depp was never much of a movie star before the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and still remains a risky bet outside of that franchise. And now Johnny Depp, who did get a brief post-Pirates bump for The Secret Window and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (he was a much-publicized supporting player), will really prove very little with a successful fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie aside from the fact that folks will still see Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
